The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization. Focusing on service to veterans, service members and communities, the Legion currently has about 2.2 million members in 14,000 posts worldwide. These posts are organized into 55 departments: one each for the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico and the Philippines.

The Department of Oregon headquartered in Wilsonville is home to all state wide administrative and leadership functions. The Department of Oregon oversees approximately 22,000 Legionnaires in 123 Posts divided into 10 Districts.

Earle B. Stewart Post 16 is part of District 9 which covers Douglas, Coos and Curry counties. There are 1,200 Legionnaires in District 9.

Earle B. Stewart Post 16 received its charter in October, 1920 one year after the chartering of the National organization. We are nearly 400 members strong. The Post supports , the Legion Oratorical Contest, Boys State and in conjunction with the Auxiliary Girls State. Members of the Post volunteer over 7,000 hours annually at the Roseburg Hospital.

The Earle B Stewart American Legion Building is the meeting home for the US Navy Fleet Reserve Association, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the US Naval Sea Cadet Program, the American Women Veterans Association, and the Douglas County Veterans Forum.

The Post maintains a Food Bank that is open two days a week. There are non-perishable food boxes available Monday and Friday from 1300-1500. A form of Veteran identification is required. We also offer gas vouchers for Veterans traveling to VA appointments and other emergency situations. Contact the Post for information on the gasoline vouchers, they are limited.

The above is but a sampling of the activities and outreach that Post 16 provides to the community. You will find activities happening almost daily at the Post.
